Styrofoam

Satish Nakched, suva

Like the plastic bags, the introduction of styrofoam as a form of packaging has made life easier and is a source of littering if the product is not disposed off correctly.

The styrofoam is used only once and discarded unlike the plastic bags that can be reused and are biodegradable. What we see now in our country is the excessive use of styrofoam in the food industry.

Due to the very light weight of the package it can travel for miles through our rivers, streams and the ocean and negatively affect the environment.

Styrofoam is non-biodegradable and appears to last forever.  But through time it is only broken down into smaller pieces, which attracts the wild life as food and is a source of so many deaths.

It is a norm that in many functions such as weddings and parties the styrofoam packs are used for takeaways  as a cost saving measure and many people opt to use this instead of paper plates.

The usage will increase and the general awareness needs to be increased highlighting the problems associated with it.

  • Satish Nakched will receive a Philips Juicer

World Food Day

Neelz Singh, Lami

World Food Day is celebrated every year around the world on 16 October in honor of the date of the founding of the Food and Agriculture Organisation  (FAO) of the United Nations in 1945.

Food security is a threat, raising awareness of the issue behind poverty and hunger. Since agriculture is the background for many countries, planting crops and vegetables meets many challenging our climate is changing.

And we want you to tell us why food and agriculture must too, to fight against poverty is to grow own food and veggies to sustain healthy living and also will gain cash for crops.

We have developed sufficient technology to reach Mars and discover water, but we have not been able to provide access to water for the farmers on earth.

The world’s poorest are being hit hardest by climate change. If we strengthen the resilience of smallholder farmers, we can guarantee food security for the planet’s growing global population and also reduce emissions.

On this ‘World Food Day’ let us take an oath not to waste food.

We should be aware of what we buy and eat, and make sure we order the right portions in a restaurant. Our small actions cause significant impact on others.

The wasted food can make another family hunger-free.

Let’s aim to make it a hunger-free generation and ensure hunger-free world results in a peaceful world.

Missing persons

Dharmendra Kumar, Suva

Fiji Sun dated 16 October, 2017 published a list of missing people. It really makes me wonder, are they really missing or are they just with friends and family members?

If they are really missing then please put more resources to locate them.

It scares me as a father.
