Report: 4-year-old boy in coma after crash that killed mother, sister
A 4-year-old boy is in a coma after a violent crash in southeastern North Dakota that claimed the lives of his mother and older sister. The Highway Patrol says a pickup truck driven by a 15-year-old boy was headed south on I-29 in Richland County Sunday when it veered off the road. The teen lost control, crossed the median and struck a northbound car driven by a 24-year-old Fargo woman.Witnesses tell WDAY that the wreckage was horrific. "The pickup, all smashed up in the front. It always hurts to read stuff like that when a child dies," bystander Jesse Tinker said. KFGO-AM reports that driver, identified as Flor Avila, her 5-year-old daughter Kayleen Avila and a 45-year-old passenger in the teen’s vehicle, James Radtke of West Fargo, died at the scene of the crash near Hankinson.Flor Avila's 4-year-old son, Reeve Avila, was flown to Sanford Medical Center in Fargo. Reeve is now in a medically induced coma. He suffered fractures in his skull and both legs, according to family friend Elena Vazquez. Hospital staff is waiting for swelling in the boy's skull to go down before they take any further actions. Vazquez said family members are trying to be strong for Reeve, like Flor Avila was for her two children as a single parent.“She became a mom at a young age, and she gave them the best life she could,” Vazquez said. “She left her son behind, and we are going to keep her memory alive for him.”Kayleen is remembered as a "diva, just like her mom." A GoFundMe campaign has been started for the Avila family. The funds raised will go toward medical expenses for Reeve and funeral costs.Radtke leaves behind a wife and three children. A GoFundMe campaign has also been created for his family.
