Major economic powers are ignoring international laws and the stated norms that dictate how fish is harvested. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization says every fifth fish is caught illegally. As a result, many countries are using military force to protect what they see as “critical national assets”.

With global fish stocks diminishing, the fight for this resource will only intensify. What can be done to protect this finite resource and prevent future military escalation?
