Organisers said the decision comes as participation numbers have continued to decline in recent years, and in recognition of the resources, time input and safety considerations which must be factored in to hosting the annual race as part of the games.

A spokesperson said: “The first Knock Hill Race took place in 1970 as a fundraiser towards creating a playing field for Cornhill.

“It was a great success and became an annual event. 2025 will be the 53rd and final Knock Hill Race to take place, having missed 2020 and 2021 due to Covid.

“The distance covered from Cornhill to the top of the Knock Hill and back to the village is 8.5 miles.

“It is a gruelling task having a road and hill race in one. The front runners are usually back within an hour.

“One hour and 45 minutes is the deadline for completion of the race to receive a participation medal.

“Runners who have set themselves the challenge to take part in the race are being urged to take the opportunity this year in what will be the final one to take place.”

The race starts at 11am on Saturday, June 7. Entrants must be aged 16 years and over. Registration and payment is required in advance online. The fee is £15 and includes games entry, race entry, medal and goody bag.

Entries close on June 1 at 23:59. The 10k road race will also end this year.
