The Government of Japan provides USD 3.6 million to support people and communities in Eastern Ukraine affected by the conflict

Kyiv, Ukraine (19 February 2018) – In 2018, the Government of Japan, the Government of Ukraine and the United Nations system in Ukraine will continue partnership in addressing humanitarian needs and support recovery in conflict-affected areas of eastern Ukraine. USD 3.6 million of assistance provided by the Government of Japan will be used to address humanitarian needs, support vulnerable groups of population and recovery of eastern regions in Ukraine, through implementation of seven projects by six UN system organizations.

This does not limit only to humanitarian assistance, but includes also recovery and development. Special appreciation goes for innovative and high-tech solutions that contribute to modernization of infrastructure and sustainable development of Ukraine.” – said Hennadii Zubko, Vice Prime Minister of Ukraine, Minister of Regional Development, Building and Housing and Communal Services of Ukraine.

“Since 2014 USD, the Government of Japan provided 1,86 billion to Ukraine, including USD 45 million through the United Nations and international organizations. In 2018 Japanese Government will provide USD 3,6 million for seven projects to be implemented by six United Nations agencies. Planned activities include procurement of radio and medical equipment, equipment to rehabilitate water supply facilities for the Water of Donbas (Voda Donbasa), renovations and procurement of equipment for civilian hospitals, repairs of households, provision of educational equipment and kits to damaged schools, organisation of trainings for doctors and nurses, capacity development sessions for communities” - said Shigeki Sumi, Ambassador Extraordinary and Plenipotentiary of Japan to Ukraine.

“The progress jointly achieved with the support of the Government of Japan and in cooperation with the Government of Ukraine is significant and highly appreciated by beneficiaries. Since 2015, with the financial support of Japan through UN-implemented programmes more than 30 socio-economic infrastructure facilities were reconstructed in Luhansk and Donetsk oblasts, including bridges, pump stations, healthcare facilities, rehabilitation centers and schools, several infrastructure facilities are under reconstruction. Financial assistance was also used for strengthening entrepreneurial capacities and start-ups of business activities, community development, building resilience in educational sector and of affected population, including stress management. The UN system is looking forward to continuous fruitful cooperation with the Government of Ukraine and Japan in promoting cohesion and sustainable development, economic recovery in conflict-affected territories of Ukraine – that is prioritized in the new Government of Ukraine – UN Partnership Framework for 2018-2022’ - said Neal Walker, Humanitarian Coordinator, UN Resident Coordinator in Ukraine.

Japan-funded projects will be implemented by six UN agencies, funds and programs: IOM (USD 0.5 million), UNDP (USD 0.4 million), UNHCR (USD 0,7 million), UNICEF (USD 0.3 million), UNOPS (USD 0.8 million), UNOPS and UNICEF (USD 0.4 million), WHO (USD 0.5 million).
