Jamaican minister to strengthen ties at UNESCO World Press Freedom Day in Guyana

Hon. Robert Morgan, Jamaica’s Minister without Portfolio in the Office of the Prime Minister (OPM) overseeing Information, is embarking on a significant journey today. 

He is headed to Georgetown, Guyana, where UNESCO World Press Freedom Day will be observed with solemnity and purpose.

Deepening bonds through collaboration

A pivotal highlight of Minister Morgan’s visit will be the ceremonial signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between Jamaica and Guyana.

Advocating for environmental awareness

At the heart of this year’s UNESCO World Press Freedom Day observances lies the urgent theme, ‘A Press for the Planet’.

Minister Morgan is poised to deliver the keynote address at an awards ceremony and media appreciation reception, where he will illuminate the critical role of journalism in addressing the pressing environmental crisis.

Panellist on climate action

Minister Morgan’s contributions extend beyond rhetoric as he takes the stage as a panellist at a stakeholders forum focused on climate matters. 

His participation underscores Jamaica’s proactive stance on environmental issues and its commitment to fostering meaningful dialogue and action on a global scale.

Accompanying delegation

Accompanying Minister Morgan on this diplomatic mission are esteemed figures integral to Jamaica’s information landscape. 

Chief Technical Director in the Information Division of the OPM, Nicola Ann Brown Pinnock, Chief Executive Officer of the Jamaica Information Service (JIS), Enthrose Campbell, and Deputy Executive Director of the Broadcasting Commission of Jamaica, Nicole Walford, will lend their expertise and support to the delegation’s endeavors.

A historic reminder

This year’s UNESCO World Press Freedom Day holds particular significance, as it marks the 31st anniversary of the United Nations General Assembly’s declaration of May 3 as a day to celebrate and defend press freedom worldwide.

Under the overarching theme, ‘A Press for the Planet: Journalism in the face of the Environmental Crisis’, Minister Morgan’s participation underscores Jamaica’s unwavering commitment to leveraging the power of the press to address the multifaceted challenges posed by climate change and environmental degradation.

Following his engagements in Georgetown, Minister Morgan is scheduled to return to Jamaica on May 4.
