Evangelina Galvan Shreeve Receives Champion of Diversity Award

Evangelina Galvan Shreeve, chief diversity officer and director of Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) education at Pacific Northwest National Laboratory (PNNL), was recently honored with the Tri-Cities Champion of Diversity Award. Galvan Shreeve has over 25 years of experience in policy and public administration. She is nationally recognized for her expertise in navigating and influencing policy; relationship management; and building dynamic diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility (DEIA) initiatives for organizations.

The Tri-Cities Champion of Diversity Award recognizes and commends both an individual and an organization for demonstrating outstanding achievements and sustained commitment to diversity and inclusion in the community and workplace. 

“Diversity and inclusion are central to our success at PNNL,” said PNNL Director Steve Ashby. “We are fortunate to have such a strong advocate and leader in Evangelina to foster a vibrant culture of diversity at PNNL and the communities in which we live and work.”

Galvan Shreeve was presented the award at the annual Tri-Cities Diversity Summit, hosted by the Tri-City Regional Chamber of Commerce on June 26, 2024.

“I am humbled to receive the Champion of Diversity Award from our community. It is a representation of our organization’s commitment to embrace inclusion and support a culture of belonging for every staff member,” said Galvan Shreeve. “My goal is to continue accelerating our WE culture at PNNL so that everybody can see themselves in the mission of the organization and distinguish themselves not only as researchers and staff, but as people who care about the impact they are having on the nation and world.”

A community organization nominated Galvan Shreeve to receive the award for her efforts guiding strategic innovation and cultivating highly engaged teams that embody DEIA principles important for STEM workforce development initiatives.

At PNNL, Galvan Shreeve and her team are leading the standard in STEM education and work-based development opportunities for students and K-20 educators. Their work is driven by the Department of Energy’s commitment to build a diverse future STEM workforce to help address some of the most complex challenges of our time.

The quality and impact of the programs Galvan Shreeve leads in STEM education have been nationally recognized. She has been asked to share best practices with other national laboratories and STEM leaders on how to follow similar approaches. 

“Evangelina’s dedication and passion for DEI shines through in everything she does. Her own personal life story is the foundation for her compassion and has made her a wonderful model and mentor for the rest of us,” said PNNL Chief Human Resources Officer April Castañeda.

As a first-generation college graduate, Galvan Shreeve has a personal commitment to create opportunities and help educators and students thrive in STEM—especially those in underrepresented or underserved communities.

“My father instilled in me an importance for opening opportunities for others. That set the career path trajectory for the work that I have done in DEIA,” said Galvan Shreeve. “My team and I are passionate about the work that we are doing to encourage students from all backgrounds to pursue careers in STEM and the importance of our work in addressing the complex challenges we’re facing around the world now and in the future.”
